The prevalence and its associated factors with hypertension among people aged 40 and above in Co To district, Quang Ninh in 2022

Abstract

A cross - sectional study was conducted to describe the prevalence and factors related to hypertension among individuals aged 40 years and older in Co To district, Quang Ninh. The study utilized a systematic random sampling method to select 743 participants. The research findings indicate that the prevalence of hypertension was 43.47%, with 46.75% of cases having been diagnosed and 53.25% being newly discovered. Among those diagnosed, 73.5% received management, and 33.3% of patients have achieved treatment goals. Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed several factors associated with hypertension, including: being male (aOR = 1.65; 95%CI: 1.12 - 2.44); belonging to the age group of 50 - 59 (aOR = 2.42; 95%CI: 1.67 - 3.50) or being 60 years old or older (aOR = 6.08; 95%CI: 3.92 - 9.43) compared to the 40 - 49 age group; being overweight or obese (aOR = 3.69; 95%CI: 1.87 - 6.43); having an increased waist circumference (aOR = 1.34; 95%CI: 1.28 - 2.02); having a salty eating habit (aOR = 2.68; 95%CI: 1.82 - 3.63); and engaging in nonrecommended physical activity (aOR = 2.84; 95%CI: 1.98 - 3.42). It is recommended that medical centers organize screening programs to detect hypertension, provide guidance on treatment management, promote healthy eating habits, and encourage recommended levels of physical activity, particularly for men and individuals aged 50 or older.
