An intervention study without a control group was carried out with all physicians and medical doctors (PMD) at 26 commune health stations in Soc Son district, Hanoi to evaluate the improved knowledge of PMD in diagnosis, treatment, counseling and management of hypertension and diabetes mellitus.
McNemar’s test was used to determine differences in proportions between pre- and post-knowledge measurements with variables such as disease diagnosis; prescription drug treatment; and consulting during the period from August 2018 to August 2019. After the intervention, the percentage of PMD correctly diagnosed two diseases increased from 82.6% to 100% for grade 1 hypertension (p = 0.046)
and from 60.9% to 90.0% for type 2 diabetes (p = 0.083). The percentage of PMD who known about the drug, the initial indication for patients with hypertension and diabetes also increased, reaching 78.3% (increased 30.5%, p = 0.035) and 91.3% (increasing by 43.5%, p = 0.002), respectively. However, no PMD had yet consulted patients as the required content both before and after the intervention. Intervention activities showed improved knowledge of PMD at the commune level on management and treatment of hypertension and
diabetes, especially knowledge of diagnosis and treatment of the disease.
