Epidemiological characteristics of children with pertussis disease in Nam Dinh province from 2017 to 2020

The aim of the study was to describe some epidemiological characteristics of pertussis disease among children in Nam Dinh province from 2017 to 2020. Subjects and research methods: retrospective descriptive study performed on 66 pediatric patients with pertussis in Nam Dinh province from 2017 to 2020. The results showed that 54.5% of children were male, average age of cases was 5.2 months, with the minimum age of 28 days and the maximum age of 67.6 months. The disease was scattered all year round, but the highest number of cases was in March. 66.7% of children were hospitalized at the frst week of onset. 81.2% of infected children had not been vaccinated with pertussis. The most common symptoms were cough paroxysmal (87.9%), cough over 2 weeks (72.7%), common complications were respiratory failure (36.4%) and pneumonia (31.8%). The mortality rate was 1.5%. The proportion of children infected with pertussis was mainly concentrated in young children that have not been vaccinated, so it is necessary to comply with regulations on vaccination for children to prevent the disease.
