Current status of tobacco and e-cigarette use and some related factors among students at Hai An High School, Hai Phong City in 2023

Abstract

A cross - sectional descriptive study to describe the current status of tobacco and e-cigarette use and some related factors in 453 students at Hai An High School, Hai Phong City from January until June 2023. Research results showed that: 4.4% of students have ever smoked traditional cigarettes; 5.7% of students have ever smoked electronic cigarettes (HTLĐT); Students smoked in public places (55.0%), bought cigarettes at grocery stores (45.0%); The source of information about the harmful effects of tobacco accounted for the highest proportion from the Internet (83.1%). The study discovered several factors related to smoking in students: having average behavior (OR = 1.93; 95%CI: 1.29 – 12.77) and having a close friend who smokes (OR = 5.16; 95%CI: 1.85 – 14.42). Factors related to e-cigarette smoking in students are: having monthly pocket money > 500,000 VND (OR = 3.87; 95%CI: 1.44 - 10.42) and having relatives with HTLDT (OR = 4.12; 95%CI: 1.14 – 14.90). To reduce the rate of smoking at school, families and schools need to build a smoke-free school environment for children to develop, especially paying attention to and educating children with average behavior.
