Results of interventions applying family medicine principles on screening, management and treatment of hypertension and diabetes at commune health stations, 2019 – 2020

The study aims to evaluated the results of interventions applying family medicine principles on screening/detection, management, and treatment of hypertension, diabetes mellitus (DM) at all 147 commune health stations (CHS) of 7 districts in 7 districts. provinces (Bac Ninh, Bac Kan, Cao Bang, Ha Giang, Hanoi, Nam Dinh and Ninh Binh), 2019 - 2020. Interventions include advocacy workshops, improving availability of essential drugs, training for commune and village health workers/health collaborators. The effectiveness of the intervention was assessed before, during, and after the intervention. The results show that the interventions have brought positive impacts to the screening/detection and treatment management of hypertension and diabetes at CHS. Specifically, the percentage of CHS implementing screening/detecting hypertension and diabetes increased from 3.4% to 90.5%. The proportion of people ≥ 40 years old in the area being screened for hypertension increased from 0% to 60.6% and people being screened for diabetes increased from 0 to 34.8%. The proportion of CHS implementing management and treatment of hypertension increased from 16.3% to 97.2%. The proportion of hypertensive patients managed and treated at CHS increased from 0.7% to 18.9% and the rate of reaching the treatment goal increased from 48.7% to 55.2%. Interventions have also initially improved the management of diabetes treatment in 2/7 districts.
