Berberine (BBR) is natural bioactive compound extracted from various medicinal plants and commonly used in the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases. BBR has broadspectrum antibacterial activity against Gramnegative and Gram - positive bacteria, including drug - resistant strains that cause nosocomial infections. However, BBR is poorly soluble in water, leads to the poor absorption into the body as well as its interaction with bacterial cells. This review is conducted to give an overview of the bacterial activity and mechanism of BBR molecules against pathogenic bacteria strains. The content is summarized from the articles recently published in prestigious international journals (ISI/Scopus) and further analyzed for specific cases. This paper will help readers understand more about the antibacterial activity of BBR as well as research orientation to improve their absorbance properties and develop potential products with high effectiveness in treatment of diseases and strengthen human health.
