The situation of using disposable plastic items and some related factors among Hue City residents in 2020

Abstract

This study aims to describe the situation of using disposable plastic items and some related factors of Hue City residents, a cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 820 Hue city residents from 12/2019 to 05/2020. The study indicated that 100% of survey participants use disposable plastic items daily, in which plastic bags account for the highest proportion (92.8%). On average, a household used about 5.3 plastic bags per day. Besides that, up to 58.7% of respondents answer that they have been doing a practice of re-using their disposable plastic items, plastic bottles were the most reused kind of all disposable plastic items (89.6%). The proportion of people who did not practice well in preventing the harmful effects of disposable plastic items was 64.6%. Age, educational background, households with children under 5 years old and knowledge about health hazards related to practice in preventing the harmful effects of disposable plastic items. In conclusion,
disposable plastic items are present everywhere. They have been becoming a threat not only to the environment but also directly affect human health. Therefore, there must be measures to eliminate and prevent its harm.
