Perspective and solution of teachers and parents on pupil mental health in 2015

A qualitative study was conducted in 5 provinces (in the North, Central, South and Central Highlands) of Viet Nam. 200 teachers and 400 pupil parents from 20 schools participated. Regarding viewpoints on pupil mental health problems, 100% of teachers and parents didn’t have the right answer to mental health defnition according to the World Health Organization;most of the ideas stated that mental health problems was similar to “crazy” with abnormal manifestations can be divided into two forms as transient manifestations, only recognized if concentrated concern such as quiet or rebellious; and abnormal behaviors, easy identifed such as inappropriate crying and laughing, hurting themselves; there was the
relationship between personal factors, family and school environment to the mental health situation of students. In terms of solutions, teachers and pupil parents also said that the school needs to study and build a learning program to ensure the educational effectiveness in the care of pupil mental health; create a healthy learning environment for pupil; parents
should spend more time for their children, fair treatment among their children.
