Epidemiological charteristics of viral encephalitis cases in 3 North Western provinces in Vietnam, 2017 - 2018

North-western region reported highest number of viral encephalitis hospitalizations in Vietnam from 2011 to 2016. We perform a cross-sectional study to describe the epidemiology of hospitalized viral encephalitis in three provinces of Dien Bien, Son La and Lao Cai from January 2017 to December 2018. Seventeen death (3.6%) among 473 viral encephalitis were reported to our study. Cases allocated in 28 out of 31 districts in three provinces. Encephalitis cases were highest in children aged 5-14 (26.8%), male (55%) and in June and July. Adult from 15 to 29 year of age accounted for 23.5% of encephalitis cases. In 86
CSF viral positive by PCR, Japanese encephalitis was 79 (91.9%), 4 (4.6%) untyped Enterovirus, 2 (2.3%) Cytomegalovirus, and 1 (1.2%) Herpes simplex virus. Only 19 (2.9%) had completed Japanese encaphalitis immunization
