Nutrition status and some related factors in patients before and after surgery for traumatic brain injury at the Department of Neurology - Phu Tho General Hospital in 2017

A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 47 patients at the Department of Neurology - Phu Tho General Hospital to evaluate the nutritional status of patients before and after surgery for traumatic brain injury at the Department of Neurology - Phu Tho General Hospital. Using nutritional assessment method according to Subjective Global Assessment
(SGA), BMI and biochemical and hematology indicators. The study showed that before surgery in 2017: the rate of malnourished patients (SDD) according to BMI; SGA; Albumin and total protein are 14.9%; 38.3%; 4.3%; and 17.0%. The rate of anemia of the patient is 29.8%. 7 days after surgery, malnutrition rate increased by 25.5% compared to before surgery by BMI; SGA was 42.6%; Albumin was 38.3% and total protein was 44.7%, anemia rate increased (76.6%). The average number of
treatment days was 11.6 days. Most patients were fed orally 2 days after surgery (83.0%). In which 8.5% of patients with pneumonia complications and are in the group of patients hospitalized for a long time (> 14 days). There was a relationship between hospitalized SGA and age group (p <0.05), BMI of patients when admitted with pneumonia complications (p <0.05). Patients who are admitted to traumatic brain injury surgery should be assessed for early detection of the risk of malnutrition to conduct timely intervention support to improve the effectiveness of treatment.
