Berberine (BBR) is a compound extracted from natural herbs, which are known for their pharmacological activities such as resistance against pathogenic microorganisms and also other non - communicable pathogens. Recently, the antiviral activity of BBR has
attracted special attention from researchers worldwide, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2. In this review, we gather recent works published in prestigious international journals belonging to the ISI/Scopus system to analyze the antiviral ability and mechanism as well as cytotoxicity of BBR. The interaction between the chemical structure of BBR and typical biomolecules is
also discussed. The content of the review will help researchers, manufacturers and interested readers better understand the activity of BBR and their derivatives to create useful products with high effectiveness in the prevention of infectious diseases caused by viruses.
