Internet addiction and some related factors of junior High school students in Hai Phong

Abstract

The objective of the study is to describe the current situation and some factors related to internet addiction of An Thang Secondary sSchool students in the 2019 - 2020 school year. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 401 students in 4 grades 6,7,8,9 at An Thang Secondary School. Research results showed that 31.7% of students had signs of internet addiction; this signs gradually decreased in the higher grades; this rate in students who regularly access the internet at home is 65%. Factors associated with internet addiction include: gender (OR= 2.29; 95%CI [1.49 - 3.54]; p < 0.001); academic ability (OR = 2.16 ; 95%CI [1.35 – 3.44]; p = 0.001);    time of using internet (OR = 1.96; 95%CI [1.25 – 3.15]; p = 0.004); internet usage time of a day (OR = 4.07; 95%CI [2.6 - 6.37]; p < 0.001); the concern of family (OR = 3.29; 95%CI [1.57 – 6.9]; p < 0.001); quitting extracurricular activities (OR = 5.44; 95%CI [3.25 – 9.09]; p < 0.001). Therefore, it is necessary to propose measures to improve the internet addiction of students at An Thang Secondary School, An Lao District.
