Knowledge and practice about adverse events following immunization of mothers with children under one year-old in Kien Thuy district, Hai Phong City, 2019 - 2020

A cross - sectional descriptive study was
conducted on 369 mothers with children under one year of age to describe mothers’ knowledge and practice about adverse events following immunization (AEFI) from October 2019 to June 2020. The results showed that: The percentage of subjects having good knowledge of AEFI was accounted for 24.9%. In case, the
rate of mothers knowing the signs of common reactions: mild fever 97.3%, mild fussiness 28.5%, pain at the injection site 15.7%; severe reactions after immunization: high fever 54.7%, convulsions 46.9%, persistent fussiness 14.9%. The knowledge of mothers about consequence of severe reactions after immunization limited:
52.6% of mothers known that AEFI also include death, persistent consequences (8.9%) and a disability (7.8%). The rate of good practice of mothers about AEFI was 81.6%. 93.2% of mothers keep vaccination book and 86.2% have discussed with doctors about their children’s health status after the last immunization. There were still 12.7% of mothers who did not keep their children for enough 30 minutes at the immunization site for monitor AEFI and
observe their children at home for 24 hours after injection; 1.3% of mothers returned home right after vaccination. The percentage of subjects having good practice of AEFI was accounted for
81.6%. It is necessary to strengthen and diversify of methods and contents of communication to improve awareness and practice of mothers on AEFI.
