Abstract

A cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample size of 130 health staff working in the Tuberculosis Prevention Program at the local healthcare facilities in Dien Bien province with the objective to describe treatment supervision activities of local health staff for tuberculosis patients in Dien Bien province in 2018. The results showed that most healthcare workers dispensed drugs to patients, instructed patients to take medicine, and supervised the patients (94.6%, 92.3%, and 72.3%, respectively). During the continuation phase, 65.4% of health workers dispensed medication to patients every two weeks. The majority of the healthcare workers instructed patients to go for regular check-ups and monitored drug side effects (98.5% and 90.8%, respectively). There was no association between the working seniority of medical staff and the efficacy of treatment supervision with OR = 1.48; 95%CI: 0.68 - 3.2. There was a significant association between the patient's adherence to treatment with the healthcare worker's supervision with OR = 3.0; 95%CI: 1.4 - 6.5. Therefore, it is necessary to maintain the sustainability of the network of local health workers in the tuberculosis treatment supervision.
