Abstract

The objective of this study is to describe the factors related to the knowledge, attitude and practice of seafarers on prevention of HIV/AIDS transmission in order to develop appropriate intervention strategies. A descriptive crosssectional study was conducted among 270 seafarers from ships anchoring at Hon Gai and Cam Pha ports, Quang Ninh province in 2017. The proportion of seafarers having good knowledge, attitude, practice was high (89.3%, 87.4% and 90.0%, respectively). The results showed that the married seafarers had good knowledge at 2.7 times higher than unmarried ones (95% CI: 1,2-5.8); these married seafarers had good attitude at 7.0 times higher than unmarried ones (95% CI: 3.1-15.8), and the seafarers having a frequency of home visits at 1-≤ 2 months/time had good attitude at 2.7 times higher than the ones having a frequency at > 2 months/time (95% CI: 1,3-5,7); and the seafarers very interested by posters, afchage had good practice at 4.2 times higher than the ones less interested by posters, afchage (95% CI: 1.8-9.7). Especially, the seafarers having good knowledge had also good attitude and practice at 5.8 and 16.4 times higher than the ones having bad attitude and practice (95% CI: 2.4- 13.7 and 6.5-41.0, respectively). These are the evidence for developing an interventional plan to improve knowledge, thereby ameliorate the attitudes and practices of seafarers on the prevention of HIV/AIDS transmission in the future.
