Abstract

A descriptive study was conducted to determine and compare the proportion of some phylums/genus of gut microbiota in secondary school students with obesity and students with normal weight in Hanoi city, 2018 - 2019. A total of 100 obese students and 100 students with normal weight were recruited in the study. From each studend, one stool samples was taken to quantify the proportion of Bacteroidetes phylus, Prevotella genus, Firmicutes phylus ND Bifidobacterium genus which have been shown to be related to obesity. The results showed that there was no difference in the proportion of these phylums/genus of gut microbiota between the two research groups in general, by residency location, in male students and goups aged 11 - 13 years old. The significant difference was only noted in the female student group, and the 14 - year-old student group (p < 0.05). The study provided a first insight into the relationship between the proportion of the gut microbiota and obesity, and it would be further investigated in order to have scientific evidence for designing activities to prevent and control obesity in Vietnamese children in the year to come.
