Abstract

5S is defined as a methodology that results in a workplace that is clean, uncluttered, safe, and well organized to help reduce waste and optimize productivity. The study was carried out to describe actual situation and analysis of advantages and disadvantages on implementation of 5S at the Department of Neurosurgery - Thoracic Surgery, An Giang Provincial General Hospital. An analytical cross-sectional descriptive study, combining quantitative and qualitative methods was applied. The research results show that: The planning phase of the department was carried out with the preparation of the necessary elements to implement 5S. All survey element scored 4 - 4.5/5 points. Examination stage: score was 4 - 4.5/5 points. Particularly, the awareness of 5S application of faculty leaders and staff about 5S was not good. The qualitative research results show the advantages: The attention and direction of the hospital and department leaders, the building of a 5S network and the assignment of leaders in charge of 5S. Difficulties: management and implementation of 5S were not regular and continuous, non-cooperation of patients and their family members.
