A cross-sectional study aimed to identify prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and associated factors among overweight women in a rural population. The MetS prevalence among overweight women was 36.76%. The MetS prevalence was the most frequent in abdominal obesity group (32.8%), followed by group with low HDL-C (27.8%), elevated triglycerides (26%); increased blood pressure (23.9%) and hyperglycemia (10.8%). Multivariate logistic regression analysis taking into account socioeconomic and lifestyle factors showed that the independent associated factors of MetS were waist-hip ratio (OR=2.57 per 0.07, p<0.0001), systolic blood pressure (OR=1.57 per 10 mmHg, p<0.0001). Increased education level was independently protective factor for MetS: Intermediate (OR=0.37, p=0.013), Secondary (OR= 0.12, p=0.001); Post-secondary (OR=0.26, p=0.011).
