Situation of patients with severe traumatic brain injury admitted to the emergency department of Viet Duc University Hospital in 2023

Abstract

All patients with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) admitted to the emergency department of Viet Duc University Hospital from March 1, 2023 to September 30, 2023 were enrolled in study. A total of 200 patients with severe TBI according to Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) ≤ 8 met with selection criteria. Ages from 21 to 60 years old accounted for 67.5%, male accounted for the majority 88.5%, however, female was only 11.5%. Cause of TBI related to road traffic accident accouted for 75%, leisure accident 14% and labor accident 11% respectively. Patients with GCS from 6 to 8 accounted for 55.0%, between 3 to 5 accounted for 45.0%. Associated lesions included maxillofacial injuries accounted for 44%, limb injuries 23.5% and closed chest injuries 22%. Emergency surgery rate was 42%, discharged to die was 24.5%, death on admission was 0.5%, so overall deaths accounted for 25%. The policies and plans for preventing accidents and injuries need to be further strengthened in order to reduce TBI.
