Situation of trauma patients admitted to the emergency department of Viet Duc University Hospital in 2023

Abstract

Trauma patients are still overrepresented in hospital emergencies, effected on medical care, disease burden as well as medical and social costs. This was a cross-sectional study from from May 2023 to July, 2023 at the Emergency Department of Viet Duc University Hospital. Causes of injuries, subjects and types of lesions were recorded. A total of 454 emergency patients, 343 of whom were due to trauma, accouted for 75.6%, men was 72% and women 28%. Ages from 15 to 29 years old accounted for 70%. The highest road traffic accidents accounted for 61.5%, of which 29.9% were related to cars, 26.5% related to motorbikes, and 21.8% related to trains respectively. The main lesions were traumatic brain injury 55.4%, polytraumatic 54.8%, limb injury 38%, spinal 21.1%. Emergency surgery was performed in 18%, deaths at the emergency department, including discharged to die, accounted for 5.5%. We concluded that injuries are still the leading causes of patients admitted in large hospitals such as Viet Duc University Hospital, with the main cause was the road traffic accidents. Severe injuries will result the risk of death, or lead to disability such as traumatic brain injury,multiple injuries, spinal injuries especially in young people, working age.
