Health education needs of the caregivers of stroke survivors at Da Nang C Hospital and its related factors

Abstract

Providing adequate information and training to care for patients after a stroke before discharge are essential to help reduce pressure and stress for caregivers. The study was conducted on 64 caregivers of stroke patients at Da Nang C hospital to investigate the health education needs and related factors. The results showed that the caregiver’s health education needs at discharge are high (median score is 12). Which, the need for health education about “understanding what stroke is, preventing the risk of stroke recurrence” and “prescription, patient’s medication, side effects” accounted for the highest at 92.19%. There was a significant difference between the current health status and the education needs of caregivers. Level of social support were negative association with related to health education needs of caregiver’s (r = 0.41; p = 0.001). Therefore, medical facilities need to strengthen the development and implementation of health education programs for caregivers of stroke patients, emphasizing knowledge of stroke knowledge and prevention of stroke recurrence, prescriptions, medications, and drug side effects.
