Status of knowledge and practice of health insurance card holders in using medical examination and treatment services at Hai Phong Medical University Hospital in 2022

Abstract

A cross - sectional descriptive study of 295 medical examination and treatment people with health insurance cards visiting Hai Phong Medical University Hospital in 2022 aimed at describing the knowledge and practices of health insurance users. The result showed that Patients had low general knowledge about health insurance (31.5%), in which correct knowledge about the scope of benefits of health insurance card holders accounted for only 17.7%. In the last health checkup, 90.5% of patients used health insurance and 9.5% of patients did not use health insurance. The reason for not using the health insurance card due to complicated procedures accounted for the highest rate of 67.9%. In this medical examination, 80,1% of patients went to the right hospital. Male patients were ability more likely to have knowledge of health insurance than female patients (OR: 1.7; 95% CI: 1.1 - 2.9), patients with and above high school education had ability higher knowledge of health insurance than patients with below high school education (OR: 5.4; 95% CI: 2.2 – 15.9). To improve people’s knowledge and practice on using health insurance, the hospital should cooperate with the health insurance agency to propagate to the people the policies of the Law on Health Insurance, using forms such as hanging posters/panos at the hospital.
