Abstract

 A cross - sectional study was conducted to describe the current status of cigarette smoking among students of Thai Nguyen University of Medicine and Pharmacy and some related factors on 993 medical students in 2023. Research results show that the rate of studentssmoking is 19.1%.  Among students who smoke, the rate of smoking traditional cigarettes is 49.5%, e-cigarettes are 15.8%, and smoking both types is 34.7%. Some factors associated with smoking in students are men (OR = 6.2, 95% CI: 4.1 - 9.4), ethnic minorities (OR = 1.6, 95% CI: 1.1 - 2.4), years 4 to 6 (OR = 1.8, 95% CI: 1.2 - 2.9), training system (OR = 2.2,
95% CI: 1, 5 - 3.3), average and poor academic performance (OR = 2.8, 95% CI: 1.8 - 4.4), cost of living/month ≥ 3 million VND (OR = 2.0, 95% CI: 1.3 - 3.0) and working overtime (OR = 1.5, 95% CI: 1.1 - 2.3). Strengthening education about the harmful effects of tobacco in training programs is necessary, implementing intervention, monitoring and control solutions to minimize the rate of smoking and e-cigarettes among students tablets.
