Clinical characteristics of acute mastoiditis in patients with extracranial complications behind auricle at the Vietnam National Children’s Hospital in 2023 - 2024

This study aim to describe the clinical characteristics of the Acute mastoiditis with extracranial complications behind the auricle in patients at the Vietnam National Children’s
Hospital. A cross – sectional descriptive study was conducted with 23 patients diagnosed acute mastoiditis with extracranial complications behind the auricle with Computed tomography - scaner at the Vietnam Nation Children’s Hospital from August 2023 to March 2024. Results showed that males participants accounted for 56.52%, while that figure of females were for 43.48%; Ages from 1 – 3 years old was the most common 43.48%; History of acute otitis media was 82.61%; Bulging swelling behind the auricle occurred 91.30%; Mastoid reaction was 100%. Acute mastoiditis that is the implammation of the bony portion around mastoid cell caused by bacteria and the bony inflammation process lasts no more than 3 months. 20% of cases of acute otitis media were complicated by acute mastoiditis. Opportunistic infections can spread outward toward the periphery as extracranial complication behind the auricle. Conclusions, Acute mastoiditis with extracranial complications behind the auricle occured in males to be more common than females but the difference was not much. The desease was the most common ages from 1 – 3 years old. And patients appeared the mastoid reaction.
