The proportion of secondary school children aged 11 - 14 years suffering from overweight and obesity in Hanoi, 2017

Abstract

A cross - sectional descriptive study was carried out to identify the proportion of school teenagers aged 11 - 14 years suffering from overweight and obesity in Hanoi, 2017. There were 8980 school children from 30 secondary schools selected for the study. Participants were measured for their weight and height. The resuls show that the propotion of overweight and obesity among students aged 11 - 14 in Hanoi in 2017 was 23.1%, of which overweight was 16.9%, and obesity was 6.2%. The prevalence of overweight and obesity was highest in the 11-year-old group and gradually decreased with age. School boys children had a higher propotion of overweight and obesity than school girls children, and children in urban areas were more overweight and obesity than students in suburban areas.
