Abstract

Bacterial growth in the biliary tract can lead to acute cholangitis. This study aimed to characterize the biliary tract bacteria with bile culture and antibiotic resistance in acute cholangitis patients with Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio Pancreatography. In 70 patients a single isolate was cultured, a total
of 44 (62.9%) cases were positive. The most common bacteria were E. coli and Klebsiella, 41.3 % and 26.1% respectively. In the antibiogram of isolated bacteria, vancomycin group of antibiotics had the lowest proportion of 8.3% in-vitro resistance. Quinolone and
Cephalosporin antibiotic group should not be used as the initial treatment regimen without the results of the antibiogram because of the high proportion of resistance.
