Abstract

Obstetric complications are still an obsession in the field of obstetrics and gynecology. Especially, the cost of treatment for obstetric complications is a great burden for the patients’ families and society. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 136 inpatients at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology - Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital from 2019 to 2020 to describe the cost of obstetric complications. Research results showed that the average hospital fees for each obstetric complication were 7,097,910 VND. Average hospital costs for obstetric complications were highest in eclampsia and uterine rupture (10,956,700 VND and 9,611,100 VND, respectively). Regarding to the cost’s components of obstetric complications: drugs and intravenous fluids were accounted for the highest proportion, 23%; followed by testing, which was accounted for 21.8%. The cases of complications referred by lower levels (province) were accounted for 73.2% of the total hospital fees that the hospital collected. The rate of hospital fees paid by insurance was 80.2%.
