Abstract

The inappropriate use of antibiotic is a problem with wide effects on every level of health care, increases the cost of diagnosis and treatment. The purpose of this study is to describe the state of antibiotic use at three hospitals in Khanh Hoa province and the cases of inappropriate antibiotic use in order to propose the appropriate interventions. A retrospective study was performed on 574 medical records of discharged patients. Research results show that clean surgeries account for 50%; inappropriate prescription of antibiotic 41.7%, the average number of days of antibiotic treatment is between 8.36 and 9.82 days; the cost of antibiotic averages between 663.591 to 1.806.333 VND; the time period of using antibiotic is equivalent with other research; the rate of hospital infection is 4.0% lower than the national studies of 1998 (11.5%), 2001 (6.8%), and 2005 (5.7%). Therefore, hospitals need to coordinate closely clinical pharmaceutical work with treatment systems to limit the inappropriate prescription of antibiotic, increase the use of prophylactic antibiotic; and improve infection prevention.
