Abstract

In recent years, numerous studies around the world have evaluated the effects of lead pollution in the environment on the development of children, lead exposure and the relationship with oxidants and antioxidants. The purpose of this study was to initially determine oxidative indices and their association with lead exposure in children in some mining industries and craft
villages in Vietnam. The exposed group had 110 children living in polluted areas and the control group consisted 42 children having lead concentration in blood < 10 µg/dL. The results showed that, the average MDA concentration and TAS activity in the exposed group was higher than the control group, the average SH concentration in the exposed group was lower than the control group. MDA, SH concentration, TAS activity between the two groups had statistical signifcance difference at p <0.01; p <0.05; p <0.01 corresponding. There was an inverse correlation between erythrocyte GPX concentration, plasma SH concentration with blood lead level, positive correlation between plasma TAS activity and blood lead level at p <0.05. This is the frst study to evaluate the relationship between oxidant, antioxidant indices and lead exposure in Vietnamese children.
