Influence of antibodies in breast milk to immune response to rotavirus vaccine in Vietnamese children

Abstract

Maternal antibody via placenta or breast milk could reduce rotavirus vaccine efcacy in developing countries. This study aims to describe the influence of antibodies in breast milk to immune response to rotavirus vaccine in Vietnamese children. In this study 189 healthy infants, divided into 3 groups (strict breastfed, strict formula fed and mix of breast fed and formula) were enrolled and given Rotarix vaccine. Serum samples and milk were collected before vaccination dose 1 and 2 (50% of children) and 4 weeks after the 2nd dose for measuring RV-IgA responses. The results showed that 38.1% of children had RVspecifc IgA antibodies below detection level before vaccination. This ratio at 4 weeks postdose 1 and post-dose 2 increased to 91.4% and
93.8% respectively. After 2 doses of vaccine, no difference between seroconversion rates and IgA titers between groups. Thus, no influence of breastmilk to both doses of rotavirus vaccine was observed in Vietnamese children.
