Abstract

A randomized, double - blind, community - based intervention study was conducted on 141 overweight and obese women aged 20 - 45 in order to evaluate the effectiveness of using medium chain triglycerides (MCT) oil on body weight, body mass index in Bac Giang. The subjects were randomly divided into two groups, with the intervention group receiving 20ml of MCT oil and yogurt, and the control group receiving 20ml of regular soybean oil and yogurt for 4 months. The result showed that after 2 and 4 months, the intervention group had a mean weight loss of (1.4 ± 1.7kg) and (1.2 ± 2.0kg), which was statistically significant compared to the corresponding control group (0.5 ± 1.4kg) and (0.2 ± 2.0kg) with p < 0.01. The mean BMI reduction was (0.7 ± 0.8kg/ m2) and (0.6 ± 0.9kg/m2) in the intervention group, which was also significantly different from the corresponding control group (0.3 ± 1.7kg/m2 with p < 0.001) and (0.2 ± 1.0kg/m2 with p < 0.01). The percentage of overweight and obesity decreased significantly compared with the control group at both 2 and 4 months intervention (p < 0.05). Therefore, the use of MCT oil in meals for overweight and obese women aged 20 - 45 may lead to decrease body weight and body mass index and the rate of
overweight and obesity.
