Abstract

A cross - sectional descriptive study was conducted in early 2022 at a high school in Nghe An province aiming to describe mental health status and related factors among students during COVID-19 pandemic. There were 383 students of 10, 11 and 12 class grades self-completing questionnaires, using Strength and Difficulties Questionnaires 25 scale (SDQ25) to measure mental health status. The results showed that the rate of students with general mental health problem was 38.1%; the rates of problems in friendship and social communication were high, at 92.4% and 55.6% respectively. Girls had higher mental health problems than boys (49.2% compared to 28.4%). Some factors associated with students’ mental health were gender (girls vs boys: OR: 2,43; 95% CI: 1,58 - 3,75), being bullied/teased at school (OR: 5,76; 95% CI: 1,53 - 21,56), under pressure to study (OR: 1,61; 95% CI: 1,06 - 2,46), study result (OR: 1,83; 95% CI: 1,08 - 3,39). Schools and families need to pay attention to the mental health of high school students and take supportive measures to reduce learning pressure and prevent school violence.
