Abstract

A community intervention study with a control group. Airm to evaluate the effectiveness of iron and zinc fortified rice in women at child bearing age from 20 to 49 years old, who had BMI > 16.0 kg/cm2 to BMI < 25kg/cm2, in rural area of Vu Thu district, Thai Binh province. The women were classified by anthropometrical indicators according to WHO (1994). 350 women involved in the study, randomly divided into 2 groups according to their age of which one group consume fortified rice with doses of iron 4mg/1g and zinc 2mg/1g, one was control group consume normal rice. Results showed that mean of weight and BMI in the intervened group have improved betther than those of the control one. Intervention effective was 44.0%. Especally, the rate of chronic energy malnutrition reduced by 77.5% and 33.3% in intervened and control groups respectively after 12 months. The difference in mean weight and mean BMI between two groups was significant after 12 months (p < 0.05)
