Abstract

This study aimed to identify the prevalence of treatment adherence and describe associated factors among outpatients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. From February to May 2020, a total of 385 type 2 diabetic outpatients at Tra Vinh General Hospital were interviewed using a structured questionnaire on several aspects of treatment adherence. Adherence was 86.5% for medication use, 69.1% for physical activity, 49.6% for diet, and 3.4% for glycaemic control. Factors associated with treatment adherence included age groups, ethnic groups, education, accommodation, income, and comorbidities. Glycaemic control adherence was significantly associated with kidney disease (PR:5.39; 95% CI: 1.66 – 17.53). As the percentages of treatment adherence are relatively low, there is a need to improve guidance and support strategies for type 2 diabetic patients to increase treatment adherence.
