Malnutrition and some related factors among the Khmer elderly in Tra Cu district, Tra Vinh province in 2020

Abstract

A cross-sectional study was carried out on 614 subjects to determine the prevalence of malnutrition and some related factors among the Khmer elderly in Tra Cu district, Tra Vinh province from May to July 2020. The results showed that the rate of malnutrition classifed by Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) was 23.9% and according to Body Mass Index (BMI) was 27.5%; the subjects at risk of malnutrition account for a very high rate of 62.1%. The prevalence of malnutrition was related to the frequency of food, low level of physical activity and some characteristics of the study subjects such as age 80 , not working at
all, low education level, poor family economic status , near poverty, and widowed status/ husband, unmarried. It is necessary to improve behaviors related to lifestyle, physical activity, and proper dietary practice in the Khmer elderly to prevent malnutrition.
