Abstract

Anemia and iron defciency during pregnancy is a signifcant public health problem, especially in the rural area. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of anemia and iron defciency, and associated factors among pregnant women. The study subjects were 300 pregnant women who attended health check at the Outpatient Department, Cai Nuoc General
Hospital, Ca Mau province from 7/2017 to 7/2018. The participants were interviewed by a questionnaire and collected vein blood sample to measure hemoglobin. Anemia and iron defciency status were classifed by the World Health Organization criteria. The results showed that the prevalence of anemia, and iron defciency were 21.0%, and 19.33%, respectively.
Factors associated with the incidence of irondefciency anemia include low education (OR=0.53), income (OR=0.81), pregnancy
month (OR=0.77), orally taking tablets regular and supplemental iron during the frst trimester of pregnancy (OR=0.24). The results of the study have provided many important databases to implement the iron supplementation program for women of reproductive age and pregnant women in Ca Mau.
