Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between cesarean section and acute respiratory disease in children during 9 months postpartum. This is cohort study, using data of 403 mother - infant dyads in Cam Giang district, Hai Duong province. The exposure is caesarean section; the disease is a symptom of acute respiratory infection including cough with breathing
difculties. Results showed that the rate of cesarean section in the community was 38%, the rate of infants with symptoms of cough and breathing difculties in the frst, fourth, six and nine months were 7.2%, 13.4%, 14.9% and 19.8% respectively. Caesarean infants are about 2 times more likely to suffer from acute respiratory symptoms than vaginal delivery infants. Conclusion: Caesarean birth rate needs to be controlled to improve the respiratory health status of infants.
