Status of death due to injury accidents in Vietnam in the period 2012 - 2022

Abstract

The Health Environment Management Agency assessed deaths due to injuries in Vietnam from 2012 to 2022, compiling data from A6-YTCS records across 10,500 communes in 63 provinces. On average, 33,619 people died annually from injuries, accounting for 8.12% of total deaths. The average mortality rate was 36.73 per 100,000 people. Traffic accidents were the leading cause, with a rate of 16.19 per 100,000, followed by drowning (5.59), suicide (5.18), and occupational injuries (2.35). Drowning was the main cause of death among children aged 0 - 14, while road traffic injuries were predominant among those aged 15 - 59 and 60+. The mortality rate for men was three times higher than for women. The 20 - 59 age group had the highest number of deaths, averaging 22,119 per year. The North Central region recorded the highest number of injury-related deaths, with an average of 8,424 annually. The study provides reliable data on injury-related deaths in Vietnam and recommends strengthening comprehensive measures to reduce injuries nationwide.
