Abstract

Demodex mites are pervasive parasites that inhabit the human pilosebaceous units. Demodex infestation can exacerbate existing acne vulgaris. Clinical manifestations caused by Demodex infestation often mimic acne vulgaris, making diagnosis and treatment more challenging. Objectives are clinical characteristics description, Demodex infestation rates, and some related factors between Demodex infestation with patients in acne vulgaris. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 188 patients who required dermatological outpatient services and were diagnosed with acne vulgaris at FOB international cosmetic dermatological institute from December 2022 to August 2023. The results of the study was patients with acne vulgaris had erythematous papules and pustules, with rates of 71.8% and 52.7%, respectively. Itching was the most common functional symptom in patients with acne vulgaris. Acne vulgaris, from mild to moderate, was predominant, with severe cases. The rate of Demodex infestation in patients with acne vulgaris was 24.5%. The study revealed a correlation between skin lesions (with distinctive functional symptoms), erythematous papules (with distinctive functional symptoms), moderate to severe acne vulgaris, and a history of corticosteroid application with the Demodex infestation status in patients with ance vulgaris.
