Situation and some factors related to overweight and obesity among children aged from 6 to 11 at some Primary schools in Hai Duong City in 2018

Abstract

A cross-sectional study was conducted on 595 students aged from 6 to 11 at 3 primary schools in Hai Duong city to determine the rate of overweight, obesity and some factors related to overweight and obesity of the student using BMI according to age and gender to assess overweight, obesity based on BMI percentiles and questionnaires to collect information on relevant
factors. The results showed that the prevalence of overweight and obesity of students aged 6-11 in these primary schools in Hai Duong City was 21.3%. The rate of overweight and obesity was highest among 7-year-old students (27.7%). Children aged 6-11 years old in families with overweight, obese parents or siblings were in 2.5 times higher risk of being overweight and obese than children in families without overweight, obese parents or siblings. Some habits such as the favorite of consuming fat meat and soft drinks, dislike eating vegetables and eating late were the factors related to overweight and obese among children. Children who often played games were in 1.5 times higher risk of being overweight and obese than children who do not play games.
