A cross - sectional study was conducted among 1689 people aged 18 to 65 years old in 10 communes of Thai Nguyen city from January to March 2021 to describe the current situation of depression and some related factors. The study results showed that the average age of the research subjects was 50 years old, most of them were female (86.92%), getting married (75.31%), completing secondary or high school (76.44%), and having health insurance (95.08%). Using the PHQ-2 scale with a cutoff of 3 to screen for depression, the study found a depression rate of 43%. The depressed subjects (PHQ-2 ≥ 3) had significantly higher mean age and rate of using health insurance compared to the non-depressed people (PHQ-2 < 3) with a p-value < 0.05. Logistic regression analysis represented that people having health insurance at 100% level and an average monthly household income of at least 10 million VND had a statistically significant higher risk of depression with p < 0.05. Therefore, it is necessary to have more effective measures for screening and early intervention for depression for people in Thai Nguyen province, especially the elderly, having chronic diseases and limited socioeconomic status.
