Prevalence of alcohol consumption and associated behaviours among university and college students in Long Xuyen City, An Giang province: A cross - sectional study

The study was conducted to determine the prevalence of alcohol consumption and its associated risk factors among students in Long Xuyen City, An Giang province. This study was designed as a cross-sectional study with 400 students at five universities, colleges, and intermediate schools in Long Xuyen City, An Giang province. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews based on structured questionnaires. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors related to alcohol consumption. The results showed that the percentage of students who consumed alcohol in the past seven days was 35.7%. The prevalence of alcohol consumption among female and male students was 30.0% and 45.1%, respectively. The odds of alcohol consumption were higher among: males [aOR = 2.51 (1.47 - 4.2)], college and intermediate [aOR = 2.14 (1.30 - 3.53)], accommodation and dormitory [aOR = 2.37 (1.35 - 4.16)], available money per month [aOR = 1.44 (1.10 - 1.89)], close friend drinking [aOR = 5.20 (2.63 - 10.29)] and parents drinking [aOR = 2.73 (1.59 - 4.69)]. Family supervision, peer education, effective campus-based counselling, and national surveillance systems should be well developed and implemented.
