A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in Da Teh and Dam Rong districts of Lam Dong province, aiming to describe a baseline survey on knowledge and practice of safe motherhood among mothers raising children under 5 years old, 480 mothers were interviewed for investigation. The results showed that although mothers’ knowledge and practice of prenatal, during birth and postnatal care were quite good., the knowledge on ≥ 3 danger signs prenatal, during birth and postnatal care is very limited (turn is 15%, 7.7% and 5.2%). The rate of examination within 7 days after birth is only 62.7%. But there are still signifcant differences between Kinh mothers and minority ethnic mothers in some of the indicators: Percentage of mothers who know during pregnancy need to perform blood tests (63.8% compared to 26.3%); percentage of mothers who know the prenatal danger signs (21.7% compared to 4.7%), during birth (12.1% compared to 1.1%), postnatal (7.2% compared to 2.1%). Education and occupation are two factors that are signifcantly related to knowledge and practice of safe motherhood. It is needed to carry out intervention activities, health education and communication on safe motherhood, focus on minority ethnic group.
