Abstract

The objective of the study was to describe the situation of sharp object injuries among healthcare workers at Duc Giang General Hospital in 2023. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 416 healthcare workers at Duc Giang General Hospital from September to October 2023. The results showed that 16.8% of healthcare workers had sustained sharp object injuries over the past 12 months, with an average of 1.2 ± 0.6 injuries per year. The most common injuries were caused by syringes (38.6%) and scalpels (38.6%), while 32.9% of the sharp objects causing injuries were contaminated. Factors associated with sharp object injuries among healthcare workers included gender, job position, overtime, night shifts, the number of injections performed per day, feeling overwhelmed by work, and feeling stressed at work (p < 0.05). The findings indicate that the rate of sharp object injuries remains high, highlighting the need for specific preventive measures for female healthcare workers, those working in intensive care units, working overtime, during night shifts, performing more than 20 injections per day, feeling overwhelmed, and feeling stressed.
