Autologous split-thickness skin graft for traumatic soft tissue defects of lower extremities at Viet Duc University Hospital

Injury to the lower limbs can impair mobility, aesthetics, and potentially lead to disability. This study focuses on cases of soft tissue defects in the lower extremities caused by trauma, surgically treated at Viet Duc University Hospital. The subjects were patients over 18 years of age, without gender distinction, who underwent autologous split-thickness skin grafting (SSG) between April 2023 and March 2024. Data were analyzed using SPSS 20.0 software. A total of 81 patients participated, with men comprising 69.1%, women 30.9%, and individuals of working age (20 - 60) making up 83.95%. Road traffic accidents were the primary cause of soft tissue defects. Skin loss in the lower legs was most common at 63.6%, followed by the ankle (20.2%) and thigh (16.2%). The largest proportion of skin loss was in the 1 - 3% range, accounting for 43.2%. Associated injuries included fractures (85.2%) and vascular damage (37%). Successful skin graft outcomes were seen in 96.3% of cases. However, 46.9% of patients experienced hypoesthesia in the grafted area two months post-discharge. The average hospital stay was 9.42 ± 6.801 days.
