Abstract

A cross - sectional study was conducted on 100 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital from December 2021 to June 2022 with the aim to describe the nutritional status of the patients. Data were collected through clinical examination, direct interviews, and anthropometric measurements. The research results showed that 64.0% of the patients had a normal nutritional status, 21.0% were classified as malnourished, 14.0% were overweight, and 1.0% were obese based on BMI. According to the Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) tool, 80.7% of the patients were not at risk of malnutrition, 19.0% were at risk of mild to moderate malnutrition, and 3.0% were at risk of severe malnutrition. Using the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) tool, 55.4% of the patients had a normal nutritional status, 40.5% were at risk of malnutrition, and 4.1% were classified as malnourished. It is important for the medical staff to clearly explain the dangers of tobacco to the patients and also provide them with knowledge about risk factors, proper nutrition, and activities to prevent chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
