Abstract

The objective of this study is to determine direct treatment costs for premature infants at the National Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology. This is a cross-sectional descriptive study on 657 patients born prematurely from 28 to less than 37 weeks at the National Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology from October 2021 to October 2022. The result showed that
the mean cost of treatment for a preterm patient was 19.640.490 VND in 16.9 ± 19.2 days with mean gestational age and weight of 33.0 ± 2.4 weeks and 1837.2 ± 562.1 gram, respectively. The cost of hospital duration accounted for 38.64%, the mortality rate in this study was 5.2%. 64.9% of patients had respiratory disorders with an average treatment cost of 23.610.051 VND. If the duration of treatment is increased by 1 day, the cost of treatment will increase by 1.284.588. If the gestational age increases by 1 week. The cost of treatment increased gradually over length of treatment. Mortality and treatment costs decreased with gestational age and weight of the patient. Therefore, in order to reduce treatment costs, it is necessary to reduce the length of hospital stay of preterm birth and strengthen the prevention for premature birth to reduce morbidity as well as mortality.
