A cross - sectional study was conducted on 83 cirrhotic patients who were hospitalized within the first 48 hours at University Medical Center Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam in 2022 to assess the prevalence of malnutrition and associated factors among cirrhotic patients. The study used Royal Free Hospital-Global Assessment (RFH-GA), body mass index (BMI), mid-arm circumference (MAC), mid-arm muscle circumference (MAMC), triceps skinfold (TSF), hand grip strength (HGS) to determine patients’ nutritional status. The 24-hour recall method was used to estimate the
dietary intake. Data about their biochemical parameters were retrieved from records with the newest results. The results showed that among 83 patients, 49 (59.1%) were male. The mean age of the patients was 60.6 ± 12.4 years. The prevalence of malnutrition according to RFH-GA was 86.7%, adjusted BMI 28.9%, MAC 39.8%, MAMC 20.5%, TSF 13.2%, and 75.9% of patients declined body function based on HGS. We found a significant association between malnutrition status and a decrease in HGS. Malnutrition is very common among Vietnamese cirrhotic patients, which necessitates regular assessment and monitoring. We recommend paying more attention to the cirrhotic patients’ nutritional status, who have a decrease in HGS.
