Prevalence of E-type colicin produced by Shigella species isolated from diarrheal endemic in Vietnam

The disease caused by Shigella spp. are significant diarrheal disease and mortality in humans, as there are approximately 165 million episodes of shigellosis and 1.1 million deaths annually. Colicin-mediated killing which has been found among several bacteria, including Shigella spp. Thirty-seven Shigella spp. strains were isolated from diarrheal endemic from 1995-2016. These Shigella spp. strains were characterized by PCR to screen for E type colicin production. S. flexneri is the most prevalent species (78.4%), followed by S. sonnei (24.5%). Eleven Shigella strains geographically related showed the colicin genotypes. Colicino type E5 was predominant in Nha Trang where E8 and E9 commonly found in Hue. In the PCR-based detection of the colicin types for thirty-seven Shigella strains, 7 (18.9%) were identified as E5, 6 as E8 (16.2%), and 2 as E9 (5.40%). No strain was found to produce E1, E2, E3, E4, E6 and E7. It is to our knowledge; the first report on prevalence of E-type colicin produced by Shigella sp. isolated from patients with diarrhea in Vietnam
