Summary:
A cross-sectional survey was conducted at three communes of Phu Cat district, Binh Dinh province to identify the seropositivity of human Gnathostoma spp. and to explore the associated factors of the disease. The study deployed data collection from immunological method to detect the antibodies of human Gnathostoma spp.; direct interviews using the pre-designed questionnaire on human practice in relation to gnathostoma infection; and laboratory examination of larval reservoirs such as dog and intermediate hosts such as eels, fish, and frogs. The results indicated the overall infection rate of Gnathostoma spp. was 7.1%. This rate was higher among men than women, and among the adults aged from 16 years old than children less than 16 years old (p<0.05). In dogs, the infection rates of 0.5% and 0.6% were reported from stool examination and from specimens collected from slaughters, respectively. In addition, the larval infection rates in eels and snakehead fish were 2.1% and 1.3%, respectively. The habits of eating raw fried eels and grilled snakeheads, or raw fish salads were reported among the surveyed community. Seropositivity of human gnathosomiasis was found to be significantly associated to genders, age groups, and habit of eating undercooked eels (p<0.05)
